Toronto - The Ukrainian community commemorated Holodomor Awareness Week with a range of events. The League of Ukrainian Canadians sponsored four days of events at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre including a display of the exhibit Holodomor: Gencide by Famine, an exhibit of children’s art and daily film showings. Students of Toronto and Mississauga Ukrainian Catholic bilingual schools gathered at the provincial legislature on November 20 to remember and share the story of the Holodomor with provincial officials. Unfortunately, government representatives showed up only briefly to address the students and left without hearing the students’ eloquent presentations. On November 22, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress sponsored a candlelight procession through Bloor West Village culminating with a memorial service attended by survivors and represenatives of all levels of government. On November 27, the League of Ukrainian Canadians arranged for the exhibit Holodomor: Genocide by Famine to be displayed at the provincial legislature. The event was attended by Ukraine’s First Lady Kateryna Yushchenko who urged Ontario’s government to join the federal government and the provincial legislatures of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta in recognizing the Holodomor as an act of genocide. Throughout the month of November many local organizations held commemorative programs which addressed all aspects of the Holodomor, from academic to cultural, successfully enaging many different segments of the community.
